Storytelling and fishing are cherished pastimes in Hawaii, and Makena Beach & Golf Resort is promoting them with two free guest activities. Celebrating the destination’s oral tradition, the hotel offers a talk-story session featuring Maui-born performer Kathy Collins and her alter-ego, a sassy local girl named Tita. Once each week, clients gather around a campfire as Collins regales the group with area legends and lore. Meanwhile, on Tuesdays, Captain Jon Jon Tabon — hailing from a long line of local anglers — shares his knowledge of age-old and modern island fishing practices. Both sessions are part of Makena’s Hawaiian cultural programs. Other free activities include perusing the hotel’s sculptures and paintings with an acclaimed Maui artist, stargazing while learning about ancient Polynesian navigation and strolling along the shore with a Maui Ocean Center marine expert.
