In August, the U.S. Travel Association named Susan Whitaker, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, as state tourism director of the year. The annual award acknowledges a professional whose work has led to measurable growth in his or her state’s tourism industry. Whitaker’s many accomplishments include the launch of the Discover Tennessee Trails & Byways program, the Tennessee Civil War Trails program and Tennessee’s sustainable tourism initiative.
“Susan is a wonderful representative for Tennessee,” said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. “She appreciates the power of travel to benefit communities, businesses and individuals. This tremendous recognition by Susan’s peers reflects her passion for travel, and I know we all look forward to her many future contributions.”
