New data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) shows that Mexico outpaced both the United States and Canada across key tourism metrics in 2025, making it North America’s strongest performer for the year.
The WTTC’s latest Economic Impact Research shows the country’s travel and tourism GDP grew 1.8%, compared to Canada at 1.2%. and the U.S. at 0.9%. Mexico’s international arrivals increased 6.1% (while the U.S. recorded a decline of 5.5%) and global visitor spending rose 3.5% (versus a drop in the U.S. of 4.6%).
Our Analysis: The U.S. Is Falling Behind
Mexico’s strong performance reinforces its status as a tourism heavy hitter — no surprise given its longtime vacation popularity.
What is more interesting is to see it outpacing the U.S. in inbound travel growth and spending, perhaps as a result of increased international scrutiny. As more people from around the world reconsider plans to visit the U.S. amid heated political issues, border concerns and other objections, the country could learn from Mexico’s example. As the destination continues to invest in its tourism product and promote a welcoming message to visitors from around the world, it is clearly reaping the benefits.
What They Are Saying: North American Tourism Overall Remains Strong
“North America’s travel and tourism sector continues to demonstrate resilience and strong long-term potential, supported by robust domestic demand and sustained investment across the region,” said Gloria Guevara, president and CEO of the WTTC. “Mexico’s performance in 2025 clearly shows the strength of its tourism sector and its growing competitiveness on the global stage.”
Guevara added that this year, North American tourism stands to see exceptional growth, thanks to the FIFA World Cup.
“The FIFA World Cup presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for North America to accelerate tourism growth, strengthen connectivity and showcase the region to millions of travelers worldwide,” she said. “This international event is a chance to capitalize on the long-term benefits it provides.”
